During these uncertain times, spending time with family is a great way to take your mind off of all that is going on. There are plenty of activities you can do together with things found at home. If you’ve run out of ides of things you can do as a family, I’ve put togeather this list of activities for families of all sizes and ages.
1. Get Outside
There are many outside activities you can do as a family. Going for a walk is a great way to get fresh air and some excercise. You can even play ispy or a do scavenger hunt while on your walk. Have your kids try to find the thing you are thinking of, or make a list of items (like a rock, an ant, an Oak tree, etc.) to find.
There are also many games to play as a family in your own backyard. Some examples include:
- Hide and Seek
- Hopscotch
- Jump Rope
- Tag
- Catch
- Four Square
Some other fun things to do outside are drawing with chalk on the side walk, blowing bubbles, taking a bike ride, or having a picnic in your backyard.
2. Build a Blanket Fort
Go back to your childhood by building a blanket fort with your kids. Drape blankets/sheets over chairs or a table. Use books or heavy objects to hold the blanket/sheet in place. Then add christmas lights and pillows to make it comfortable and cozy. Once your fort is done, you can cuddle up and watch a movie together as a family.
3. Indoor Games and Activities
Having a family game night is a great way to connect with your family and create lasting traditions and inside jokes. There are so many fun games to play, some of my favorites include
There are also many games you can play that you can make with objects found in your home. For example, you can make a cats cradel game by tying a long piece of yarn together, or make an obsticle course with furniture and other items found in your home. You can also blow up some balloons and see how long you can keep them in the air. Putting together a puzzle is another fun activity you can do together.
4. Make Crafts
One of my favorite activities is to make crafts with things I have at home. Some easy things you can make that kids can play with include:
- Slime
- Homemade Playdough
- Sidewalk Chalk
- Bouncy Balls
- Kenetic Sand
- Homemade Paint
- Stress Balls
There are many recipes for all those things on pinterest.
You can also make things for them hang up or decorate their rooms. Paintings, drawings, and coloring pages are things they can hang anywhere in the house. You can also make homemade clay, to make decorations or sculptures. There are also a lot of things you can make with toilet paper tubes and egg cartons. 5. Cook Together
Having your child cook with you helps them learn more about how to cook and what foods are healthy vs. not healthy. It can also encourage them to try foods they may not have tried before. It can be fun to cook dinner together as a family. Some easy things you can make as a family are:
- Homemade Pizzas
- Muffins
- Ice Cream in a Bag
- Cutout Cookies
- Lasagna Cups
- Ham and Cheddar Crescent Roll Ups
No matter how long Covid-19 lasts, one thing we can be greatful for is all the extra time we get to spend with our families.
